Customer Review: Great unit for its bargain price
I bought this unit as a refurb when I saw it had the features I wanted and at a rock-bottom price since it was a refurb. I had not had any problems with other refurbished electronics I purchased in the past so I did not hesitate to order. I found that the unit Amazon sent me was impeccable, no blemishes, scratches or any other cosmetic defects (unlike some of the other refurbs I’ve bought). The unit worked flawlessly. One thing I like is that it has features such as speech-to-text and mp3 and picture viewer features that the more expensive models only have. Also the unit can be upgraded to include hiking and marine gps functions. The interface is a bit dated but the maps are accurate (Navteq, 2006). For those who want to spend a little more money, you can buy this unit and then upgrade to a recent map and interface update that Magellan has just released for this unit. For a limited time they are offering a free topographic map, hiking, and marine gps functionality for free when you purchase the update. The update makes the interface look like the maestro line’s interface. All-in-all a wonderful unit that I had no problems with.
Customer Review: Good GPS …. Near-Worthless Points of Interest
I cannot find anything wrong with the GPS itself and would probably have given it 4-5 stars if that was all there was to it. Unfortunately, an old points of interest file which apparently hasn’t been updated in 10 or more years lowers the rating significantly. A great machine with crummy instruction makes a so-so (at best) product.
I recently took my GPS to San Antonio, Texas with the hope that I could give it a good test and find places I wanted to find. Only once did it actually have the “point of interest” I was looking for. One particular restaurant I knew was in The Quarry Shopping Center (which has been in SA for over 10 years)could not be located. I started entering names of other stores I knew had been in the Quarry since its opening and came up with nothing. I had to give up on that request since apparently the GPS had POI that didn’t even know a major shopping center, which had been around for a long time, even existed.
A little later, in frustration after numerous fruitless searches, I decided to give it an extra easy task. I would look for all of the Target stores in San Antonio or within 100 miles. I figured I would probably get a lot of old stores but at least I would get something. The result? There are no Target stores in Texas! The nearest Target is in Baton Rouge, Louisiana!!! Good heavens, I thought…what are these points of interest good for?!?! Does Magellan care AT ALL for its customers?
I realize I can’t expect up-to-the-minute information but over 10 years old?!?!?! Come on Magellan!
Know that when you consider this great deal for a GPS that you will be getting a great machine for the price. I only hope you will be content with finding only ancient sites because reasonable updates to the POI file is apparently too much to ask!

Customer Review: Don’t do it…
I’m a wildlife biologist in Montana, and use GPS units daily. I originally purchased 5 of these units for my research, and had 3 units malfunction — with three different problems. One would shut off if tapped, one would shut off if you hit the page button, and the light stopped working on a third. Because of Amazon’s great service, and my need for quick and compatible replacements, I ordered three identical units to replace the broken ones. I just had a fourth unit die — the same problem where it shuts off if tapped. Features are nice, interface is intuitive, but quality is sorely lacking.
Customer Review: What you see, is what you get
I received the Garmin 12CX for Christmas, replacing my older Magellan 2000XL. The Garmin is definitely a more versatile unit, having the ability to upload/download topo map waypoints and routes. However, the color display is difficult to read unless facing the light source. I am also not completely satisfied with the contrast adjustments for the colors. When you get a good contrast with one, the others seem to be “washed out”. I would like to see more icon symbols that are related to hiking rather than boating. The icons can save time in establishing an easier method to find a saved waypoint. Overall however, I would say that this unit is very user friendly and has a much better use (with power saver) of battery power. I will be using rechargable (1650 mah) AA batteries in mine to save $ over the alkaline variety.

Customer Review: TomTom should be ashamed to put their name on this product
This product simply does not work on either the Treo 700p or the Treo 700w, despite any claims that TomTom makes to the contrary. (The box lists both of these as supported models.)

Let me preface my review by saying that I write software for Treo phones for a living, so I know these phones inside and out. However, that knowledge did not help me get this GPS to work.

I was excited to receive this GPS as a Christmas gift. However, when I installed the software on my Treo 700p, the installer displayed a message that this was an incompatible device. The 700p is listed on the box as a supported device, so this didn’t make any sense. I tried updating the ROM on my 700p to the latest 1.10 ROM that is available from Palm, and that did not help. I also downloaded an update for the TomTom software for the Treo 680 (available on Palm’s site). That did not help either.

After messing around with this and searching the web for 2-3 hours, I gave up and started over on my Treo 700w, which is also listed as supported on the box.

This time, the software installed and looked like it was working except that it couldn’t detect the GPS. I followed the instructions very carefully for pairing the Bluetooth connection and setting up a COM port to communicate. (By the way, this process is ridiculously difficult for the average customer, but it is doable.) I tried several different COM ports and configuration options, and nothing worked. I was following word-for-word the instructions on TomTom’s website.

I tried to contact TomTom at one point, but their website thwarted me. First, their website was ridiculously slow, taking up to 5 minutes to load each page. Next, you have to create an account to submit a support question. That seems like overkill, but I did so. Finally, once you find the support page (which is well-hidden), if you type too much in your support question, you get an error message that tells you to press the Back button and update your question. When I pressed the back button, I was upset to find that it had lost everything I had written.

At this point, I gave up, and I am asking the gift-giver to return this awful product for something that works.

I have used TomTom stand-alone GPS units in the past and really liked them. But this experience has really soured me on the brand.
Customer Review: Love this product
I wasn’t to activate over the phone’s wireless connection, but otherwise the install went fine. Great product, use it everyday to handle Los Angeles traffic (loves how it generates new routes when you have to abandon the original one).

I have connectivity issues with Tom Tom Traffic, and it doesn’t always seem to know about the delays, so I’m not sure I could recommend that added feature.

It is small, cheap, reliable…
you can play mp3, videos etc using software beside using is as a car GPS.
But, if you are a computer geek, you can do more with it. Just install Windows CE and use it as a PDA… You can still use it as a Car GPS though. Updating software make it out of warranty, but who cares? it is not that expensive and you may turn back to the factory defaults anytime.
More, Using free softwares coded for Windows CE, you can use it as a handhold GPS saving your tracks, best for geocaching(long battery life), you can install dictionaries, you can play games..

If you are going to use it as a car GPS, it is still great, i liked the GUI they designed, the only drawback is the maps are obsolete , you may have problems finding stores just behind you.

Customer Review: Nice for travel
I got this at a great price. I throw it in the carryon bag for travel, as it does photo viewing and mp3 files (if you get a bigger mini SD card). I had some trouble with it in crowded cities and had to reset to get satellites. Who cares for the price I paid? One for the car and one for travel! Navigon’s other GPS units are great too - have all the features of the higher-priced units, good displays, and lifetime traffic reporting if you buy higher into their product line.
